Xinhua News Agency, Wuhan, December 30th (Reporter Tan Yuanbin) Six scientific research units including the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences launched the "Thousands of Protozoan Genome Project" in Wuhan on the 30th. This plan will complete the genome sequencing and analysis of about 10,000 protozoa in three years.
Protozoa are mainly a large group of single-cell eukaryotes, including single-cell eukaryotes and protozoa. "As long as there is water, there are protozoa." Miao Wei, deputy director and researcher of the Institute of Aquatic Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said at the launching ceremony that the number of protozoa species that have been described so far exceeds 60,000, and unknown species are more difficult to estimate. However, there are only over 400 species of protozoa that have publicly published genomic data.
Miao Wei said that the “10,000 species of protozoan genome project” was jointly initiated by the Institute of Aquatic Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tibet University, Henan Agricultural University, Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing Institute of Genomics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. From 2020 to 2022, they will rely on the germplasm resources of more than 3,000 strains of eukaryotic algae and protozoa deposited by various sponsors to complete the genome sequencing of about 10,000 protozoa through continuous sample collection and metagenomic data mining. And analysis. This 10,000 or so species of protozoa include all 26 protozoa, covering more than 85% of the classes, 60% of orders and 30% of families and genera.
Algae in protozoa contribute nearly 50% of the photosynthetic behavior on the earth. They are also excellent food and nutrition for aquatic animals and humans. At the same time, some dinoflagellates and diatoms in protozoa "crazy" can cause rivers and oceans Poisonous algal blooms cause serious environmental problems. In addition, many protozoa are important pathogenic parasites of humans, livestock and aquatic animals, such as Plasmodium causing human malaria, trypanosomes of sleeping sickness, coccidiosis of chicken coccidiosis, etc.
Relevant experts believe that the launch of the “Thousands of Kinds of Protozoan Genome Project” will help to understand the basic life science issues such as the mechanism of biodiversity formation, the origin and evolution of sexual reproduction in multicellular organisms, and promote the information of the National Science and Technology Resource Sharing Service Platform. It is of great significance to interconnect and promote the mining and application of native germplasm resources related to ecological environment protection, nutrition health and disease prevention.
